Historical
Notes about Elton
Elton Hall was
anciently the seat of the Sapcotes, the first of whom to reside here
was Richard Sapcote, Knight, who died in 1477. About the year 1600
the family ended in three heiresses, and a few years later the Hall
was purchased by Sir Peter Proby, who was Lord Mayor of London in
1622, whose great grandson, Sir John Proby, was created Earl
Carysfort in 1789. On the death of William Proby, 5th Earl the
titles became extinct however descendants of the family still reside
at Elton Hall which also contains a magnificent library of early
printed books.
Elton Rectory dates in part from Elizabethan times; an old gateway
leading to the offices was brought from Warmington and re-built here
by the Rev. P.C. Claughton, Rector 1845 – 1860 afterwards Bishop of
St Helena.
Elton is one of the parishes of the District of
Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is
Huntingdon, the other principle towns being
St Ives
home of the Chapel on the Bridge,
St Neots
the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of
Godmanchester and
Ramsey
site of the former Abbey.
